-----------------------------------------------------------------
Please turn in your Bibles to Act 3… as we continue Chapter-by-Chapter and Verse-by-Verse… now in Acts 3 and looking at VSS 1-10.
Last week, we finished Acts Chapter 2… which spoke of the promise of the Father… also the promise of Jesus… the Baptism with the Holy Spirit… which was fulfilled at Pentecost.
And, many Jews who were in Jerusalem for the feast… gathered to investigate the supernatural signs and wonders happening around and in the disciples.
As they Holy Spirit descended and filled the believers… a sound like wind… tongues like fire… and a gift of languages were all present.
So, Peter stood and addressed the crowd… and some doubted while others honestly inquired… desiring to understand.
After Peter’s first sermon… many Jews were cut to the heart realizing they crucified Jesus… and they would repent… they would turn to God… and 3000 souls were saved that day… and then baptized.
The early church was founded that day… founded on Jesus… founded on the Holy Spirit… and daily growing by a group of people who were steadfast in love and devotion to God and one another.
And, as they pressed into the simplicity of the word, fellowship, communion, and prayer… “the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.”
V43 states, “Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.”
Many wonder and signs were done through the apostles who were open to spiritual gifts… who were open to the Lord’s leading… who were open to the Lord working through them.
These wonders and signs were purposeful… as God is not haphazard.
Repeatedly in scripture God uses supernatural signs to substantiate a teaching… then the Holy Spirit pierces the hearts of listeners, and many say, “Yes” to Jesus.
The phrase in V43 “… many wonders and signs were done through the apostles…” that phrase should leave you wanting to know morewanting to know how the Holy Spirit worked through them.
And, that’s exactly what Dr. Luke records next… an account of just one of the many wonders and signs done through the apostles.
The title of today’s message is “Wonders & Signs at The Gate Beautiful.”
Let’s Pray!
Acts 3:1 “Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.”
Let’s pause there and take in the setting.
Peter and John… two of Jesus’ closest disciples… Peter, James and John… Jesus’ inner circle.
And, now these two head out to the temple at the “hour of prayer, the ninth hour.”
The Ninth hour… our 3pm.
Jews had 3 stated times of prayer...
Early morning in connection to the morning sacrifice.
The Ninth Hour in connection to the evening sacrifice.
And, sunset.
An interesting observation about the ninth hour… it was at the ninth hour that Jesus Cried out “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”…
drawing the crowds attention to Ps 22 that He was fulfilling in their midst.
Jesus was the Passover Lamb, and He was the evening sacrifice.
It was at the ninth hour that Jesus was taking on the full weight of God’s wrath on sin… taking our place… as we place our faith in Him.
And, we will see in Acts 10, that at the ninth hour… the Centurion Cornelius has a vision from God to go to Peter… which was a major turning point as the gospel went to the Gentiles.
So, ninth hour… significant events…
At the Ninth Hour… Jesus bears the weight of sin for all mankind… Jew and Gentile alike.
At the Ninth Hour… through Peter… a miraculous healing and the gospel further extends to the Jews.
At the Ninth Hour… Cornelius has a vision…and the Holy Spirit will fall upon the Gentiles.
I’m not sure entirely what to make of that, but certainly it seems that at the Ninth Hour… God was on the move… moving at the time of prayer… at the evening sacrifice.
So, at this Ninth hour in Acts 3… Peter and John go out into the world… as Jesus told them to “Go and make disciples”
And, as they go… they are met with ministry.
And, that’s what you should expect… not always, but be open and ready for ministry.
This reminds me of Peter’s admonishment of speaking freely of the Christian life even when facing persecution… 1 Pet 3:15 “But sanctify [or consecrate] the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense [Gk. apŏlŏgia- an apologetic] to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear [gentleness and reverence]...”
If believers who faced persecution… were to be bold and fearless… speaking freely about their hope in Jesus…
How much more should we be open about our faith… knowing persecution is not knocking at our doors?
Think about it… if you’re not open with your faith in times of freedom… how will you do if persecution does come?
Be bold… open about the hope of Jesus.
And, the disciples were open to God moving in their lives… they had a sense of wonder what God was going to do… an expectation of Him moving.
I do too. I don’t look for ministry, but in my openness to God moving… so often I find myself praying with people.
People are hurting and lost out therethey need prayer… some need the light of the gospel.
And, that’s exactly what happened to Peter and John… they were going to the temple for one purpose (to pray)… and God re-directed as their path crossed a man who knew hurt and feeling lost all too well.
Let’s see how Dr. Luke describes this man and his location…
Acts 2:2-3 “And a certain man [God sees the man first (his humanity)… and the condition second (his infirmity)] lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, [The Gate Beautiful] to ask alms from those who entered the temple; 3 who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms.”
So, we find ourselves at The Gate Beautiful. I have slides depicting this gate… and I want you to envision the scene of this man laid here… as Peter and John approach the Temple…
This gate is also called “The Golden Gate” or “The Eastern Gate”… which scholars see as having future prophetic significance… Ezekiel wrote often of the East Gate.
The prophetic significance was known… even to the point that in 1540-41 A.D., by order of the Ottoman Sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent… this gate was sealed shut with 16’ of cement… which was believed would prevent the Jewish Messiah from gaining entrance to Jerusalem.
I can promise you… it will take more than 16’ of concrete to stop our God.
This gate was not called “Beautiful” for no reason… it was elegantly decorated in Corinthian brass and it seems only the Nicanor or Corinthian Gate was decorated more exquisitely.
Both of these gates were covered in brass that was polished… reflective and eastern facing… brilliant in the morning sun.
Josephus wrote this of the Nicanor Gate, “there was one gate that was without [the inward court of] the holy house, which was of Corinthian brass, and greatly excelled those that were only covered over with silver and gold.”
Once a Jewish man or woman passed through the Beautiful gate they entered the Court of the Women… but, only men could proceed beyond that first court and ascend 14 steps leading to the Nicanor Gate into the Court of the Israelites.
Josephus continues, “Now the magnitudes of the other gates were equal one to another;…
Josephus states were nine gates total from the Court of the Gentiles… 3 to the Court of Women… and 6 to the Court of the Israelites, and they measured 45’ high x 22.5’ widemassive gates… each forming squares.
Josephus continues “… the Corinthian gate [The Nicanor Gate], which opened on the east over against the gate of the holy house itself, was much larger; for its height was fifty cubits [one cubit is roughly 18”]; and its doors were forty cubits (75’ high x 60’ wide) ; and it was adorned after a most costly manner, as having much richer and thicker plates of silver and gold upon them than the other.”
So, that gives you a sense of the magnitude of the Temple… so much detail… overwhelming in size and beauty… even just in the gates.
And, these gates were designed to separate…
There was much exclusion… many barriers in Judaism to approach God. Josephus in his book “Against Apion” wrote how the temple had many safeguards to protect the purity of the temple from being profaned
And, the profanity was people… the safeguards were against ceremonial uncleanliness of people…
Josephus wrote, “Into the first court [the Court of the Gentiles] everybody was allowed to go, even foreigners [Gentiles]… all the Jews went into the second court, as well as their wives, when they were free from all uncleanness [all Jewish men and women were permitted into The Court of the Women, just beyond The Gate Beautiful]; into the third [the Court of the Israelites beyond the Nicanor Gate] went the Jewish men when they were clean and purified; into the fourth [the Court of the Priests and the Holy Place] went the priests, having on their sacerdotal garments; but for the most sacred place [The Most Holy Place… beyond the Veil], none went in but the high priests, clothed in their peculiar garments.” [and only once a year on Yom Kippur, to offer the blood of sacrifice and incense.]
The message was clear… “keep out… keep out… keep out.” Josephus wrote of signs in Greek and Roman letter hung stating, “no foreigner should go within that sanctuary.”
Contrast that with when Jesus “yielded up His spirit” “…the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom…” A clear message from God… that by His Son… anyone could now boldly come to the throne of grace.
For this lame man at The Gate Beautiful… it’s not certain if he was even permitted to enter beyond the Beautiful Gate.
In Lev 21, men with physical defects… lame, blind, broken hands, feet… even eczema… these prohibited a man from serving as a priest, but these were not prohibitions against lame men entering the temple to worship.
Later, in 2 Sam 5, the Jebusites mocked David as he approached a fortress on Mount Zion held by them… 2 Sam 5:6-8 reads, “And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, “You shall not come in here; but the blind and the lame will repel you,” thinking, “David cannot come in here.” 7 Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion (that is, the City of David). 8 Now David said on that day, “Whoever climbs up by way of the water shaft and defeats the Jebusites (the lame and the blind, who are hated by David’s soul), he shall be chief and captain.” Therefore they say, “The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.”
So, was David referring literally to blind and lame…? The context seems to indicate that… the “blind and lame” are a reference to the Jebusites… not literal blind and lame people.
Regardless, in Acts 3… this man who was lame is outside the gate.
And, as Peter and John approach this Gate Beautiful… they encounter this man.
V22 indicates this man was over forty years old.
His entire life… over 40 years of it… from his mother’s womb he never knew what it was like to walk.
As a child… he missed games… likely made fun of… likely ostracized as that culture was not kind to people with disabilities.
His occupation… begging was… undoubtedly not by choice… it was all he could do as that time period offered few opportunities to people with disabilities.
We know this man had people in his life…
Unable to independently come to his place of begging, we read in V2 “… whom they laid daily at the gate…”
Who are “they?” Family? Friends?
Were they kind and caring… patient with him?
Or did they treat him like a burden?
We don’t know.
His outlook on life… his interactions OR lack thereof his very identity… ALL shaped by his condition.
AND, He is... a picture... of humanity… helpless and with a hopeless condition.
And, what a contrast as he sits before some the most beautiful gates of the Temple of the Religious System.
A religious system full of pomp… full of pride.
A religion that was as crippled and powerless as he was… unable to heal… unable to save… unable to provide hope.
And, it’s the same today… no institution of religion can save.
Many of us… in various ways have been crippled by circumstances and people in life…
For me, it was addiction… and while programs of man were helpful… it wasn’t until God touched my heart that true deliverance was manifested in my life.
Only an encounter with Jesus… and an acceptance of Him as your Lord and Savior can free you of what is hindering you… and permit you to enter the right side of eternity.
This lame man… for over forty years… was “… laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms from those who entered the temple…”
And, no doubt… in his asking of alms… he was successful…
Religiously pious Jews, men and women, would enter through the Gate Beautiful to the Court of Women which is where the treasury was located.
You may recall the account of the widow and the two mites… Mark 12:41-44 “Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. [Interesting… he saw “how” they were they putting their coins in the treasury] And many who were rich put in much. 42 Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. 43 So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; 44 for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.”
That day in the Court of the Women… Jesus observed much pride in the offerings of the rich… they wanted to be seen by others… they longed for praise and recognition not from God… but from other people.
How easy would it be for the lame man to receive alms!?! What an opportunity for religious hypocrites… “Look at me… how pious and religious I am… I’m such a good person giving to this poor lame beggar!”
This is one of the reasons we don’t “pass the plate” here at Calvary Chapel… not that passing the plate is wrong (because it’s not).
But, we don’t want you to feel pressured to give, and we don’t want you to face the temptation of desiring the praise of other people.
During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said in Matt 6:1-4 “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds [same Gk. word for “alms” in Acts 3] before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 3 But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.”
Israel was full of hypocrites who were full of pride and longed for recognition in this lifetime from other people.
And, as we look back at that time… it’s as if the church today is looking in a mirror. There are wolves in sheep’s clothing… hypocrites… birds nesting in the branches.
But, it’s still the church… it’s still Christ’s beloved bride. And, God will sort it all out in the end. That’s His business… you focus on you and your obedience to God in your walk.
The early church was not perfect… but it was a church that was powerful… “… endued [or clothed] with power from on high.”
They relied on the Holy Spirit… who would make them powerful witnesses for Jesus.
That’s what we need to be today… there is a hurting world out there… ‘lame from their mother’s womb’… and they need true Christians… abiding in Jesus… and empowered by the Holy Spirit to be a witness of God’s grace, truth, and love.
The early church modeled being empowered by the Holy Spirit…
We read "… they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.” (Acts 2:42)
And, were open to God working through them.
If we can just focus on the simplicity of abiding in these thingshow much impact can we have in our communities and our world?
This lame man is a picture of the many people we walk by daily… lacking the power to escape their infirmity in life…
But, for this man who was lame… the day of transformation had come… as he encountered Jesus.
Acts 2:3-8 This certain man lame… “…who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms. 4 And fixing his eyes on him, with John, Peter said, “Look at us.” 5 So he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. 6 Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” 7 And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. 8 So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them—walking, leaping, and praising God.”
What was different about this day, that… Peter fixes his eyes (or looks intently) on this man?
Knowing this man was strategically laid here daily… at this main gate to the the Temple… it is very likely that even Jesus walked right past this man.
Jesus likely saw him, but never healed him…
No doubt, this lame man heard of Jesus… and heard of His miraculous signs and wonders.
Remember what Jesus said to John the Baptist’s disciples? Matt 11:5-6 “The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6 And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”
This lame man at The Gate Beautiful NEVER experienced the healing touch of Jesus. What did he think? Was he offended? Did he scoff… “some healer He is!”
He is a picture of humanity. How many people today scoff at Jesus? They’ve heard of Him, but they’ve not truly encountered Him… they don’t have relationship with Him… they’ve not trusted their life to Him.
And, they sit lame at the gate… begging.
And, we can sit back and wonder, why wouldn’t God heal this man? People wonder… why does God do -or- NOT do. Careful with those thoughts… would you become a Judge over God?
In Isa 55:8-11 we read the words of the LORD, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. 9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts. 10 “For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, And do not return there, But water the earth, And make it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower And bread to the eater, 11 So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”
God is Sovereign… and we are not.
Who am I… who are you…who is anyone to question God’s ways? We are to trust in Him. His ways may be mysterious… and not always easy, but we "...we know that all things work together for good to those who love God...” (Rom 8:28)
Maybe God has not healed someone yet, because he is waiting to work through YOU… wanting you to step out in faith and pray for them… maybe He wants to work through you, just as He worked through Peter on this particular day… for this certain man lame.
For this man… maybe it was God’s will for him to NOT be healed during Jesus’ ministry, so that God could work through Peter… and set the stage for thousands to get saved…
Because that’s exactly what happened.
In Acts 4:4… after this healing… and after Peter’s 2nd sermon… we read “…many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men [just the men alone…] came to be about five thousand.”
This healing would substantiate the truth of Peter’s second sermon. And, people will listen to someone who has been used by God for a miracle.
And, the Jews will hear and many do believe Peter, as he testifies of Christ.
This lame man was known and seen by many Jews… as he sat at the Gate Beautiful for over forty years. And, now… what a testimony to all as he ‘walk, leaps and praises God…’
In V5, when this lame man first gave his attention to Peter and John, we read he expected to receive something from them…no doubt he expected just a coin… but GOD had so much more for him.
This man is a picture of humanity… the brokenhearted expect so little… and that’s when God shows up big.
Ps 34:18 “The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite [a crushed] spirit.”
Sometimes we get downtrodden in life… we feel the weight of the world… we can’t see past tomorrow… but God has so much more for us.
People may throw us a crumb here or there… and it’s helpful, but God wants to fully restore us.
Peter tells this man, “Silver and gold I do not have [‘I don’t have money for you], but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.”
Peter offers this man the best thing in life… relationship with Jesus Christ… and as a bonus… for some reason on this day… Peter has the sanctified confidence to boldly say to this man, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.”
We don’t know if Peter received a word of wisdom… or a gift of faith, but He knew to offer something to the man… beyond a crumb… not just a coin… but he offered transformation by the power of Jesus Christ.
Have you ever been asked to speak with or pray for someone and something comes over you… and you speak more boldly than you normally would?
I remember being asked to pray for a High School girl that I did not know. Her parents were not saved, and they were beginning to prohibit her from going to YFC events.
Something… the Holy Spirit… prompted me to pray boldly to change the hearts of the parents, and for this girl to witness the power of God.
And, that’s exactly what happened. My friend, who asked me to pray, later told me not only did the parents stop prohibiting her, but now they were encouraging her to go to YFC.
I believe that was God working through me, just as V43 states, “…many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.”
Do you believe that God still wants to work through you and I today? I do.
I read in Heb 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” The doctrines He taught and gave to the Church stand… some 2000 years later.
I read in Acts 1:8 … a foundational verse for the whole Book of Acts… a foundational verse for the entire church age… “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
I don’t read that God stopped giving us the power to be His witnesses by the Baptism with the Holy Spirit.
And, I read in 1 Cor 12:31 “But earnestly desire the best gifts.” I don’t read “stop desiring gifts.”
1 Cor 12 also states the Spirit distributes gifts “…to each one individually as He wills.”
Which of the many gifts does God want to use to work through us today? Look at all these gifts the Bible lists in 1 Cor 12, Rom 12, and Eph 4.
Miraculous Gifts
Tongues (of men or angels)
Interpretation (discerning tongues)
Miracles (workers of miraculous power)
Healing (physical or psychological deliverance)
Enabling Gifts (all done through the Holy Spirit at specific and precise times)
Faith (this is not saving faith, but a bold spiritual conviction )
Discernment (Judging righteously)
Word of Wisdom (a revelation about people or circumstances and speaking biblical truths into a situation)
Word of Knowledge (a revelation of insights… intimate knowledge)
And, Team Gifts (to build one another up… and to reach people for Christ)
Apostleship (sent ones… missionaries)
Evangelism (Leading others to saving faith in Jesus Christ)
Prophecy (boldly and fearlessly proclaiming God’s truth)
Teaching (accurately dividing the whole counsel of God)
Exhortation (“a calling to one’s aid”… motivating others to action, application, and purpose)
Shepherding or Pastoring (“one who tends the flocks or herds”… overseeing, training, feeding, coaching/leading, counseling, caring for)
Serving or Helps (These are the deacons… who serve through practical physical or spiritual ministry).
Mercy-showing (being attune to needs of others and comforting those in need)
Giving (generosity of material resources)
Administration (organizing, administering, promoting, leading).
Joseph was an Administrator… David and Solomon were administrators… God worked mightily through various Administrators in the Bible.
And, that brings us back to our point… Do you believe that God still wants to work through you and I today?
He’s given us gifts… He’s given us the power of His Holy Spirit… and Jesus is the same today as He always has been.
And yet… there are Christians today who fail to reach a world that feels as hopeless and helpless as this man who was lame before The Gate Beautiful.
On one side of the isle stand Christians who fear the Holy Spirit… they deny Him… they limit Him… they don’t want Him to work through them.
And, many lame sit before the Beautiful Gates of their religious system… begging.
And, it’s heartbreaking.
And, on the other side… there are Christians trying to force the Holy Spirit to perform… when it may just not be His time.
There’s a reason God chose not to heal the lame man… until the day His divine will and purpose was served…
When I look at the early church in Acts, I see a church that continued daily in teaching, unified fellowship, communion, and prayer.
And, that’s all they did most days. But, on some days… we read how God’s Holy Spirit moved through them.
And, we need to be doing the same thingremaining steadfast in our abiding and being open to Him moving through us… in His timing.
And, look what happened when Peter was open to God working through him… let’s look again at V7…
Acts 3:7-10 “And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. 8 So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them—walking, leaping, and praising God. 9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God. 10 Then they knew that it was he who sat begging alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.”
It’s a miracle! Peter emboldened by faith… discerning God’s will… exercising gifts of miracles and healing… reaches down to this man… just as God stoops to us day by day and Peter lifts this man up.
And, notice the word in V7 “immediately”… not gradually… or after much physical therapy… NO... immediately… instantly… now his legs worked…
Bones were strengthened… muscles formed… joints moved… nerves were activating…
He felt his legs… he had feeling in his legs…
And, this would impact his heart and the hearts of the people around him.
This man was lame no more… never walked a day in his life… begging for alms all his life… now he is leaping, standing, walking… he entered the temple… and appropriately… he praised God.
And, his life was a testimony… a living testimony… as the people recognized who it was… they were filled with wonder and amazement…
The word amazement in Gk. is ekstasis … where we get our English word “ecstasy.” By def. the word means “a displacement of the mind.”
Their minds were blown… simply because Peter allowed God to move through him. To use him.
I encourage you as we close… be open to how God wants to use you and your gifts this week.
There are many hurting people in our community… and there are many lost people sitting at The Beautiful Gate… just waiting for a miracle in their lives.
Will you allow God to work through you?
Be open and say, “Yes” to God.
Let’s Pray!
Read ahead. Next week we will look at Peter’s 2nd Sermon where he will address the crowd regarding ‘who will get the glory for this miracle’ as seen in V12.
If you need prayer for anything…
“The LORD bless you and keep you;
The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you;
The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.” ’
